Vardune
Vardune is a densely forested region of the Seven Kingdoms bordering the Axis River.
The Aeriad
The inhabitants of Vardune are the Aeriad, a race in the process of devolving from avian to ground-dwelling species.
- Wings: Their vestigial wings have atrophied from disuse and are now mostly decorative, though some are still capable of gliding.
- Appearance: Slender and frail with skin that has a metallic sheen. They possess a crested coxcomb of feathers.
- Attire: Simple, austere tunics and capes made of viridian linen.
Sub-Species
- Green Aeriad: Seldom exceed five feet in height. They are skilled horticulturists with vast knowledge of seeds and plants.
- Blue Aeriad: Taller and more aggressive than their green cousins. They serve as hunters and protectors of the race.
Society and Settlements
The Aeriad were originally sky-roving hunters but settled in Vardune after their homeland was annexed by the ancient Phaedrans.
- Settlements: Most are built along the eastern banks of the Axis River.
- Vashay: The largest settlement, known as the River City. It features a breathtaking bridge and triple-tiered terrace dwellings.
Industry: The Viridia Plant
The economy of Vardune revolves around viridia, a species of giant pod-bearing plant. [^1]
- Viridian Linen: The fibrous down inside the pods is spun into cloth.
- Lacquered Pods: The ten-foot-long pods are cured and used for skiffs, wagons, and roofing materials.
- Tendrils: The plant's tendrils are woven to create furniture, bridges, and dwellings.
Governance
- The River King: Vardune is ruled by the River King, a position that can be held by either a Blue or Green Aeriad.
[^1]: Viridia is the primary resource of the region, and its versatility is essential to the Aeriad way of life.
