Ferran
Ferrans are rodent-faced humanoids of short stature. Their bodies are covered with a coat of dirty brown fur, and they typically dress in scavenged bits of clothing and gear.
Appearance and Origins
Ferrans are believed to be descended from the Jaka or Beastmen.
- Adaptation: During The Great Disaster, their ancestors hid in underground tunnels. Over time, they adapted to subterranean life, developing smaller, more agile forms and excellent night vision.
- Senses: They possess keen senses, though their sensitive ears make them averse to loud music.
Subterranean Lifestyle
Ferrans live in underground warrens comprised of a maze of narrow tunnels, pits, shafts, and peep-holes.
- The Pack: They congregate in groups ranging from a dozen to over a hundred individuals.
- Scavenging: Packs emerge at night to scrounge for food or rob unwary travelers. They will eat practically anything except carrion.
- "Finding": Ferrans are compulsive pack-rats who prefer to steal (or "find") rather than acquire items by honest means. Every male maintains a "hide-hole" for his most prized treasures.
Social Structure and Reproduction
Ferrans are incredibly prolific, with females often giving birth to litters of a dozen or more babies every three months.
- Mating: Partners change often; females are generally attracted to males who have amassed the most loot.
- Nursery: Young are raised in underground nurseries until they are old enough to join the pack in scavenging.
- Leadership: Packs are led by a Pack Leader (typically the most successful scavenger). He plans raids and allocates loot.
Defensive Traits
Ferrans avoid direct conflict, utilizing stealth and speed to escape danger.
- Noxious Scent: If attacked, they can release a repulsive scent to deter predators. [^1]
Relations and Religion
- Allies: None. Ferrans have no formal relations with any other nations.
- Religion: They have no interest in religion or magic. Their primary focus is the acquisition of loot.
- Burial: The dead are buried above ground, covered with stones and debris after their possessions have been divided among the survivors.
Language and Names
- Tongue: Ferrans speak a crude version of Low Talislan.
- Naming Conventions: Common names typically end with a double "X", "K", or "Z" (e.g., Pixx, Firzz, Dworkk).
[^1]: This scent is considered highly offensive by most other races, contributing to why Ferrans are seldom welcome in civilized lands.
