Jhangaran
Jhangarans are odd and ungainly in appearance, characterized by marbled brown and sepia-colored skin, elongated limbs, and elliptical craniums with pinched, angular features. Both sexes are hairless and can reach heights exceeding six and a half feet.
Appearance and Traits
- Attire: They go about barefoot, wearing only loincloths and bands of coarse cloth wrapped about their arms and legs.
- Origins: They are believed to be descended from a mixture of wild humanoid peoples, possibly including the Ahazu of the Dark Coast.
- Temperament: Jhangarans are sullen, superstitious, and prone to hostile or violent behavior.
Society and Living Conditions
Jhangaran society is divided into tribal groups based on occupation. There is very little unity or cooperation between clans.
- Environment: Settlements are typically abysmal, featuring open sewage ditches and vermin-infested huts.
- Diet: They subsist on raw meat and sea-slugs. They do not use fire or metal-working.
- Vices: They have a profound weakness for cheap alcohol, which often makes them mad and unpredictable.
The Four Tribes
The tribes are distinguished by the color of their arm and leg-wrappings:
- Mud-Miners (Grey): Those who dredge the swamps for minerals.
- Marsh-Hunters (Green): Those who hunt the local fauna.
- Mercenaries (Black): Warriors for hire.
- Outcasts (Red): Those branded with the "stigma of doom." [^1]

- The Horag: During the Septenarial Concordance (a 14-day lunar alignment), they fear a massive monster called the Horag. Many would rather commit suicide than face it after sunset.

[^1]: Accidental touch by an Outcast results in immediate branding. The victim must then join the Outcasts or commit suicide. [^2]: Outcasts suffer a massive penalty (CHA -10) in all social dealings with other Jhangarans.
